From LGS to Harper

A new day, a new name. Apparently some of you want an explanation!

First, I feel I need to dispel a few myths:
•I have not gone off Bowie.
•I have not had any life changing self-realisations.
•It’s not a case of ‘Lady Grinning Soul’ “just not being me anymore”.
•This is not as sudden as it might seem.

In fact, changing my blog’s name to (It Girl. Rag Doll) was the first step in this change. I’ve known for a while that I wanted to change my pseudonym, and giving my blog a name that is separate from me was the first step.

Step two was choosing a new name. For the past three years I’ve felt extremely lucky in that Lady Grinning Soul – a name I chose half-heartedly and almost offhand – has sat with me so well. However, I’ve known for quite a while that were I ever to be published, I would want to do so under a pseudonym that felt more natural. Something that more closely represented a real name. Not least of all to dissuade people from asking me my real name. When I introduce myself as Lady Grinning Soul, it is often met with a face that clearly says “You’re not going to make me call you that, are you?”.

Why now? Because an opportunity fell into my lap; a piece of work to put my new name to. (More on that soon.)

As for the name itself… I’ve been sitting on the name Eliot for a long time. It has some personal meaning to it, but is also a nod to George Eliot and T.S. Eliot. Besides which, it’s a serious but linguistically beautiful name. (In my humble opinion.) Harper comes from author Harper Lee; To Kill a Mockingbird was the first ‘literary’ novel I ever read (at the age of eleven) and given that I am currently studying English Literature it seems like that experience might have had some bearing on my life. I also wanted a name that was unisex, so that my own gender wouldn’t colour my work too significantly (although I don’t ever intend to deny my own femaleness). Not to mention the musical connotations of the name which, clearly, have some bearing on my life.

And there you have it.

In August I will have the chance to renew my URL. When that happens I will change the URL of my blog, and that will be the end of the name Lady Grinning Soul. Until then, watch out for incremental changes as I slowly claim Harper Eliot.
